TITLE: Library/Media Center Instructional Assistant

STAFF LEVEL: Administration

CLASSIFICATION: Part Time/ Non-Exempt

Overall Responsibilities

 The primary responsibility of the Library Media Center Assistant is to assist the Media Specialist in all aspects of library and technology circulation. This position requires the applicant to perform the circulation functions of the library such as checking materials in and out; shelving and storing assets; and cleaning, repairing and maintaining the library collection. This position may require supervision of small groups of students for short durations of time in the absence of the Media Specialist.


•        High school diploma or equivalent (GED)

•        Two (2) years of post-secondary education or training related to library media or equivalent work experience related to job responsibilities or a combination thereof

•        Ability to keep records and prepare reports using computerized systems

•        Has experience or familiarity with the Dewey Decimal system

•        Ability to work with students and demonstrate our core values

•        Has, in the judgment of the administrator, the ability to:

o        Work under the direction of a certificated instructor 

o        Assist with research and library skills instruction of students

o        Keep accurate records and prepare reports as directed

o        Work with students and staff in an appropriate manner

o        Maintain confidentiality

•        Demonstrated aptitude and competence for assigned responsibilities

•        Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may deem appropriate and acceptable 

Principal Responsibilities

•        Assist students individually or in small groups with research, computer-assisted instruction, and book selection

•        Perform all steps in the circulation process

•        Process books, periodicals, and audiovisual materials (incoming and outgoing)

•        Shelve books, read shelves, and assist in maintaining the general orderliness of the library media center

•        Assist students and staff with location and use of materials and equipment

•        Gather materials for classroom units of instruction as directed

•        Assist with annual inventory procedures

•        Prepare overdue notices

•        Assist with the repair and mending of library books and materials

•        Guide volunteers in their designated tasks

•        Monitor appropriate student conduct standards in Library Media Center and the Innovation Lab both in the presence and absence of the library media specialist

•        Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as the supervisor may assign 

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 12pm-3pm

Hours: 15 hours per week
